What you need to know about the 11+
Buckinghamshire operates a grammar school system. The 11+ is a set of tests that children take, in first few weeks of Year 6, to see if they're a good fit for grammar school. Think of grammar schools as secondary schools that often focus on academic learning.
What's the big idea? The 11+ aims to identify students who might thrive in a more academically focused environment. It looks at things like how well a child can understand and use words (verbal reasoning), solve number problems and puzzles (non-verbal reasoning and maths), and how well they can understand written information (English).
Is it compulsory? Nope! Taking the 11+ is completely optional (though, in Bucks, it's an opt-out system). It's a choice that families make together.
What happens after the test? If your child takes the test, their results will be used to decide if they've reached the standard needed for grammar school entry. If they have, and you've named a grammar school as one of your preferences, they'll be considered for a place.
